Bullfighting banned in Barcelona

Wether it's because they want to be separate and different from the "Fatherland" or because they care about animal welfare or both... it seems like a victory for the bulls in Cataluña as they vote 68-55 to ban the ancient (and truly barbaric and backwards) tradition of bullfighting.

I can't tell you how happy I was to hear this and so glad that I've lived to see it. I hope I live to see it banned in all of Spain and anywhere else in the world were this painful, dangerous and senseless event takes place.

House wins Victory for Animals... now we need the Senate

On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted nearly unanimously to pass H.R. 5566, the Prevention of Interstate Commerce in Animal Crush Videos Act of 2010. Congress will soon recess for the remainder of the summer, but we are hopeful that a Senate companion bill will be introduced when the session resumes in September.

VALLEY FORD CHEESE COMPANY NOW CERTIFIED HUMANE®

(Herndon, VA) July 19, 2010 - Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) announces today that Valley Ford Cheese Company of Valley Ford, California has been awarded the Certified Humane® label for its cheese.

Valley Ford Cheese Company is located at Mountain View Jerseys, a 640 acre dairy farm in Western Sonoma County, California. Owned by Paul Bianchi and his children Karen Bianchi-Moreda and Steve Bianchi, the farm has been operated by Bianchi/Grossi families, since 1918.

Valley Ford cheeses originate from a closed herd of over 400 Jersey cows. The closed herd concept means no outside breeding stock is ever introduced to the existing animals. Using this type of process has been shown to cut down on disease and generally produces a healthier and stronger animal.

The farm is well known for its Estero Gold Italian farmstead cheese and a new cheese Highway 1which recently won a medal at the California State Fair. The Estero Gold is an aged artisan cheese that is made in the tradition of the Swiss-Italian canton of Ticino where the Bianchi/Grossi great grandmothers were from. Highway 1 is made in a fontina style.

“We have a lot of pride in our product and our farm, it shows the minute you enter the gates,” said owner Karen Bianchi-Moreda. “We took the certification process and inspection very seriously, and believe me the dairy and our cheese making processes were looked over with a fine tooth comb by the HFAC inspectors. We had nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain by becoming Certified Humane®,” she added.

HFAC is the leading non-profit certification organization improving the lives of farm animals in food production. The Certified Humane® designation assures consumers that meat, poultry, egg, or dairy products they purchase have been produced according to HFAC's precise standards for humane farm animal treatment. Animals must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behavior. I debated wether to post this graphic and heartbreaking video. But then I thought, that if I... we, keep turning our heads and choosing not to really see the reality of what is, we will never really understand, and it will forever remain something " we heard on the news...". Whenever you eat your next yummy lamb meal, or beef shawarma, or your ropa vieja... think what you see in this video is what happened prior to this food showing up in your plate. This is not only something we must not support but something we should not eat as well. I guess it would be a perfect world if we could all be vegetarian, but at the very least, the amount of animal flesh we consume should be so low, that the demand should drop tremendously. If you are a meat eater, please support HUMANE TREATMENT OF FARM ANIMALS so that they are feed well and live a good life until it's time for them TO GIVE UP THEIR LIVES IN ORDER TO PRESERVE YOURS. There is no reason why these animals should live tortured lives to end up in the slaughter house and then you EAT THAT TORTURED FLESH, and God knows how much ANTIBIOTICS they were filled with or what kind of DISEASE it has, and now you are consuming. So think about this as you go through life feeding yourself and your families. As far as products made from animals, IT SHOULD NOT EVEN BE AN ISSUE, IT SIMPLY SHOULD NOT BE. We are living in 2010, there are plenty of other sources that we can make coast and soaps from. If you choose not to look at this videO, it's ok. But think that YOU CHOSE NOT TO WATCH IT BECAUSE YOU KNOW IT IS HORRIFYING AND HEARTBREAKING AND THAT IT'S SOMETHING YOU CHOSE NOT TO CONFRONT!

Animals affected by Oil Spill

Bureaucracy not letting enough bird experts come to the rescue, especially those birds who are covered in oil but are still in flight. Louisiana Wildlife Dept says it has all the tools and resources to take care of the problem and that those resources need to be ready when the "calling" comes and the time is right. WHEN THE F*CK IS THAT IF NOT NOW??!!!

This past July, the ASPCA assisted in collecting forensic evidence and conducting behavior evaluations of dogs rescued during a federal and multi-state investigation that led to one of the toughest crackdowns on dog fighting in U.S. history. Raids were conducted on various dog fighting operations in eight states and resulted in the rescue of more than 500 dogs.

Banning of Unnecessary Cosmetic Surgery on Dogs

This is a great step towards a new consciousness that respects nature, in this case, dogs. Most breeds get some kind of cosmetic surgery, wether it's clipping their tails, making their ears pointy as in the case of Dobermans, or the atrocious "de-barking" where human pigs who are too lazy to train their dogs to minimize unecesary barking, will have a surgeon take out their vocal cords, making the dog unable to communicate at all. Imagine your neighbor taking out your baby's vocal cords because he cried too much at night.

Yet, there seems to be some glimpse of consciousness in the world and this is certainly proof of it. 

"Banfield, the nation's largest network of animal hospitals, with more than 730 hospitals and 2,000 veterinarians nationwide, has just announced that it will no longer dock dogs' tails, crop their ears, or remove their vocal cords--a cruel procedure known as devocalization, or de-barking!"

Not a another HOLOCAUST!

  It's odd that we punish the act of putting human beings in gas chambers or ovens but we seem to have no problem doing it with animals. This practice is DISGUSTING and completely REVOLTING.

If animals need to be euthanized for some reason, which I don't support either, unless they are seriously ill and in major pain, or their condition severely deteriorated, injection is the only humane thing to do.

TAKE DOG FIGHTING SERIOUSLY

How would you like it if they took your kids away from you, put them in cages, beat them up and starve them in order to make them really angry, and then put them in a ring to rip each other apart for the entertainment and profit of others? Pretty fucked up right? Well, that's what they do to dogs and other types of animals. Take the Michael Vick story. A guy who had loads of money yet had a dog fighting rink, for what...? I say he was a vicious sadist who took pleasure out of seeing animals hurt each other. He's not the only one. However, he is now in jail and lost everything. WOOOORD! and I hope others like him suffer the same fate. Animal fighting should be a federal offense!

It's funny, I grew up in Puerto Rico where an old time national sport, practiced mostly by the "jibaros" or country people was the famous cockfights. Funny how when the majority of people in society, particularly those of the male gender, decide that something is OK, it just has no relevance how disgusting, barbaric or gruesome the action might be. We take it at face value and go... "sure...OK!"

It was not until later in my adolescence that I thought to myself "hummmm... there' something wrong with this picture." Why do we take pleasure in seeing living beings destroy each other? Well, let's ask the boxing fans. Which is interesting because at least in boxing, there are certain safety rules, they don't fight till the death, and they don't get starved or beaten before they go on the ring. Or punished if they don't do well. NO, they train like athletes, eat, sleep like the rest of us, and if they make money, they live like kings and spend the rest of the time partying and spending all the cash. Very different from the life of a dog used for the same purpose.

Animal Gladiators

This article is not just about roosters, who are merely used here as an example of the various animals that are used for "fights" by humans to entertain themselves, for those who find animal gladiators ripping at each other entertaining, and for profit.  Please read this alarming story. It's an example of how little regard we have for life in this planet, no matter what their form is. But hell, they kidnap kids and sell them to prostitution and we kill each other for no reason, so why wouldn't they do it to animals... NOOOT!

These are words spoken by Al Carter, director of animal operations at Moore County animal control in Eagle Springs, North Carolina.
He’s talking about 74 roosters “rescued” from a cockfighting bust. In lieu of contacting sanctuaries or rescue agencies to try and save even a couple of these roosters, animal control officers spent six hours shooting every bird in the head. A bullet to the head may be a quick death if done properly, though I can’t see how that’s possible with a frightened, squirming chicken. But imagine if these were 74 dogs from a puppy mill - would your response to a bullet to the brain be a little different? Would you be a little offended or appalled if an animal control director said that all puppy mill dogs are good for is a bullet to the head?
