I've heard several times before that the real reason why the church instituted celibacy was to be able to keep all the properties and money that belonged to the priest's widows upon their death, and in this way they could increase their fortune and power. They sold people on the idea that in order to be "closer to God" priest needed to practice celibacy and give up all rights to marriage so they could dedicate themselves entirely to their faith and the community.
Would we ask President Obama to leave his wife and two daughter so he can be closer to his people? so he can better serve our country more completely and without distractions? Should we conclude that he is not dedicated enough because he has to share his love, time and devotion with his family as well as the American people?
The Catholic Church really needs to reform itself. At the very least, they should allow priests the choice, so that those who want to follow celibacy can do that, and those who choose marriage can also do that and neither has to give up doing what they love.
I do have one bone to pick with Father Alberto, because I feel like he tried to have the best of both worlds.
According to the news, he's know this woman for 10 years. I don't know if that means they've been in a relationship these 10 years, but something tells me, based on the allegations of love he made today in the press, that this is not something new. So why if he knows the Catholic Church does not condone priests marrying or having sexual relationships did he hide this issue. Why wouldn't he give up priesthood in order to marry this woman. He said it himself today "I don't need to apologize for falling in love with a woman..." and I mean... he goes to a BEACH to hang out... come on, it's like he wanted to be caught. Could you have picked a more secluded place where people keep more of their clothes on? I know it must be hard to have to choose between two things that feel right and fulfill you as a human being, and quit your own TV show. But you know...
In any event, another reason why the church should seriously look into this. Maybe if they were allowed to marry they would not be molesting so many children!

Jen I will have to disagree with you on your last point. Pedophiles don't stop being pedophiles, just because they get married.

Yeah, I see your point, and yes, some of these pedophiles might be this way regardless. However I think that it is possible that in some cases, if they were allowed to have a healthy sexual relationship with a woman, or whomever they choose as a partner, their sexual energy might be channeled in a healthier more appropriate way.
When a human being experiences extreme repression of some kind, in this case sexual, the mind can become very ill, and what are natural impulses become twisted and distorted and manifested in what we call "perversion" A perversion is a distorted and twisted view or manifestation of what is usually a natural impulse.
